  • Russia-Korea rail link to boost trade, peace: Russian FM
    Thursday
A planned rail link connecting North and South Korea to Russia's trans-Siberian railway will strengthen trade and boost the Korean peace process, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Friday.

"Concrete steps" are being taken to restore a rail link from Russia's trans-Siberian route through 800 kilometres (497 miles) of North Korean territory, Lavrov said after talks with South Korean counterpart Song Min-Soon.
"This project is important not only in terms of expanding economic ties between our states... but as a basis for strengthening the peace and security of the entire Korean peninsula," Lavrov said.
The three sides agreed last year to form an international consortium to build the rail link, which has been under discussion since 2001.

Song said he and Lavrov "welcomed the expansion of Korean business in Russia and agreed to take all possible measures to expand mutual investment by both states."

South Korea "can be the ideal partner in the Russian government's programme to develop the Far Eastern and Siberian regions economically and socially," he said, referring to a multi-billion-dollar (euro) plan to develop the sparsely populated region, which has also attracted interest from Japan.
