Russian Internet celebrates 10th anniversary
MOSCOW - The Russian Internet officially
turned ten years old Wednesday, as various organizations having
a hand in creating virtual Russia celebrate the anniversary.
On April 7, 1994 the International Organization [for Standardization]
Internets registered the so-called top- level domain dot .ru
and the history of the Russian Internet began.
Ten years later, Leonid Reiman,
Communications Minister, is saying that making sure all Russians
are connected to the Internet is a top priority if Russia’s
communications technology is to progress, theMosNews web site
reports.
Many Russians cannot afford a PC, and so efforts
have been made to create communal internet access points for
those who don’t have a computer in their home. Over three million
Russians have used such opportunities, Reiman announced.
Ten years ago very few Russian people knew what
the word Internet meant. Today, there are as many as 14.6 million
users — which is 13 percent of the population
